The Café Chronicles - Special Edition Baker & Co Providore and Patisserie

Baker & Co

Providore and Patisserie 3 Church Street

Geeveston TAS 7116

Open: Wed - Sun

10:00 - 5:00

This incredible place is NOT a cafe.

Sure, you can get phenomenal coffee.

Absolutely you can eat delicious cakes, pastries and light meals.

Baker & Co is so much more than your run of the mill cafe, it's exactly what the name says; a providore and patisserie of the highest order.

More importantly, they are located in the beautiful southern township of Geeveston who have been hit particularly hard following the recent bushfires.

The town was evacuated for the better part of two weeks during the busiest period of trade for these tourism-based businesses.

Worse, the major tourist attraction in the area was damaged by the fires and cannot open to visitors for some time.

There are many other reasons to visit this beautiful area though and I really hope that this post helps to encourage some of you to hop in your car and head down for a day trip.

This entire region needs your support right now.

Tell Fiona that Naomi sent you.

It won't get you anywhere, but I'll feel super important!

Ambience:

Classy french country meets rustic gorgeousness in the design of this store.

The colours and tones are just beautiful and I could hang out in there all day...and not just for the tantalising selection of quality homewares and cookbooks either.

You can purchase a cast iron pan, a selection of cheeses and cured meats, along with locally produced olives and preserves and then follow it up with some house-made goodies and fresh baked bread.

Seating:

Pretty little cafe tables provide a place to sit and watch the world go by while you nibble on a pastry and devour a coffee

Menu:

A set menu of light meals accompanies the selection of breads, pastries and cakes, with a daily offering of salads and savoury dishes including the famous deep dish pies.

Ordered:

I couldn't go past the Cypriot Grain Salad with Poached Chicken, Pomegranate and Almonds, which was delicious. The big guy had a 350g 12-hour Slow Cooked Beef and Red Wine Pie and I've never seen a man look at a pie quite like that.

We also picked up a container of one of the daily dishes, a Sesame Dressed Soba Noodle Salad to take home to our son, who promptly inhaled it.

Drinks:

Mark had his usual cappuccino, made using the house roast which I sampled and was deliciously rich and complex.

I chose the Rabbit Hole Organic Tea for a change and selected the Ginger Snap blend...holy cow people, it was so fragrant and soothing! I'll be drinking that again, for sure.

Try:

I think that we won't be able to go past the Smokey Slow Baked Beans on Sourdough next time. Or the Banana Blueberry Bread with Ricotta and Honey.

Or the Chicken and Tarragon Pie.

Or...
