The Café Chronicles - Room for a Pony
Room for a Pony 338 Elizabeth Street
North Hobart. TAS. 7000
Open: 7 days
Room for a Pony has legendary status here in the south of Tasmania.
If you talk about cafes to visit, someone will ask "Have you been to Room for a Pony?"
Well, now I have. And I'm as impressed as everyone else.
Ambience:
Room for a Pony doesn't just have the appearance of an industrial building; it did actually used to be a garage and service station.
Now it is an open and airy meting place, right on the edge of the trendy North Hobart cafe strip.
Seating:
A mixture of large communal tables and small seating selections are spread out over three areas, outside, inside in the old service bay and in a bright and welcoming upper section.
Menu:
Fresh, healthy and fully tasty options are abundant on the menu at Room for a Pony, including some seriously good sounding vegan options.
Ordered:
We headed there for Sunday breakfast and I know that you'll be shocked to hear that my man ordered his usual poached eggs on sourdough, with bacon and relish, and also a side of herbed mushrooms.
He loved the entire dish, although wasn't a fan of the herbed dressing on the mushrooms. That was a personal thing though, and he pointed out that the mushrooms themselves were cooked perfectly and delicious.
I went for a walk on the wild side and ordered house-made sourdough crumpets with cinnamon and nutmeg whipped ricotta, lemon curd and poached rhubarb.
It was so lush. The whipped ricotta made me moan, it was that good, lol. The balance of sweet and tangy from the curd and the fruit played off against the creaminess of the ricotta perfectly.
Drinks:
You'll be surprised to hear that hubby ordered a cappucchino and I got a brewed chai with soy milk.
Both were perfect. My chai came with a side dish of honey for sweetening, which is always a nice touch.
Try:
Mark wants to have a go at the Potato Rosti with Roast Pumpkin, Poached Eggs, Spiced Pepitas and Burnt Butter Hollandaise (drool)
And I think that next time I will tuck into a the Breakfast Congee or the Turmeric Spiced Scrambled Tofu with Nutritional Yeast and Diced Vegetables.
